Dear families,
This weekend was particularly difficult, and I want to explain why I have decided to temporarily step back from coaching most of our divisions.
On Friday, I left work early to make it to the 4:30 p.m. game, putting myself at risk of getting in trouble at work. Yet players arrived at game time, and some arrived after the game had already started.
Afterward, I rushed home to get extra pink jerseys because the league had informed me at the last minute that our JUNIORS and ELITE teams would be playing each other. I also picked up players to help complete both rosters because several families were unavailable on such short notice.
ELITE is made up mostly of older, 2012 players, while JUNIORS consists mostly of younger, 2013 players. Knowing the difference between the teams, I brought additional players to help JUNIORS compete.
By halftime, ELITE was ahead 6–0. The JUNIORS were discouraged, and some no longer wanted to continue. Mario and Jonathan approached me and asked whether they could play with JUNIORS. I agreed, hoping to keep the players engaged and make the game more competitive. JUNIORS eventually came back to win 8–6.
I understand why switching players raised concerns, especially when it changed the outcome. Looking back, I could have communicated the decision more clearly. But both teams are part of our program, and I care about both. My intention was to give the children a meaningful game. Being accused of favoritism and spoken to hurtfully was painful.
On Saturday, some parents approached me without even saying hello and immediately asked, “Where is Coach X?” or “Where is Coach Z?” I understand that families may have a preferred coach. However, our coaches are volunteers with jobs, families, and other responsibilities. When they cannot attend, I do my best to make sure the children still have someone there to support them.
On Sunday, I woke up at 5:00 a.m. to prepare and pick up players. Only six players had confirmed their availability, so I contacted others to complete the team. I arrived at the field at 7:30 a.m., but once again, many players arrived at game time while the opposing team was already warming up, and the referee was ready to begin. We risked forfeiting because we did not have enough players ready.
I was frustrated, and I recognize that my frustration showed. I am responsible for how I communicate, even when I am overwhelmed. At the same time, timely responses, punctuality, and respectful communication must be shared responsibilities.
One comment compared my coaching to an Amazon purchase: parents pay for a service, and if they do not like it, they return it. That was especially hurtful given the personal time, transportation, effort, and care I have devoted to this program.
My weekends have been dedicated to these children and their families. I schedule games, organize uniforms, pick up players, fill incomplete rosters, and try to give everyone meaningful minutes. I have welcomed players who were turned away elsewhere because I believe children deserve opportunities to learn and belong.
My priority has always been to provide a positive experience where players can learn, develop, and enjoy soccer. Winning matters, but so do confidence, participation, and growth.
Families are entitled to ask questions and raise concerns. What has become unsustainable is the repeated criticism and the way some concerns are expressed. It has left me emotionally drained and affected the joy I once felt coaching.
For that reason, I will temporarily step back from coaching most divisions and continue supporting the program in an administrative role, whether from the field or from home. My direct coaching involvement will primarily be with the division or divisions in which my own son plays. For the other divisions, the assigned coaches will make their own decisions about positions, substitutions, and playing time. Please direct coaching questions respectfully to the coach responsible for that game.
Thank you to the families who communicate, arrive prepared, offer help, and treat our coaches with kindness. Your support matters deeply.
I care about these children, and that has not changed. I also need to care for my own well-being and set limits on what I can continue to give.
Coach Martha

Estimadas familias:
